Every year there are thousands of students who begin their college career with the intent of perusing a career in law. Becoming a lawyer is a lot of hard work and discipline and it is a lot of hard work in itself just getting into a law school. Preparation could not be any more important for law school and it is the key to having a successful learning experience.

There is a great deal of coursework and tests to take, including the LSAT, and only the best of the best will make it past this point. If you want to excel in the field of law, you should take all the steps necessary to ensure preparation and to meet your goals.

1. Start thinking about your future early

It is never too early to start your preparation for a career as a lawyer. A person who thinks far ahead will almost uncertainly exceed. During your freshman year of your undergrad program, you may want to consider seeing a specialist such as a pre-law advisor. This will lead you down the right path early and will give you proper knowledge of what you should expect and do to be successful. What courses should I take that will be most beneficial to me? What law schools should I consider? These are some questions that will be answered when you see a pre-law advisor.

2. Take a variety of challenging classes

Aside from your basic pre-law curriculum, you should also take a variety of classes that challenge your thinking skills and help you learn valuable information. Law schools also encourage perspective lawyers to take a broad range of courses that will improve writing and oral skills because these two skills are essential for a law career. According to the American Bar Association, most law schools accept students who meet a wide variety of skillsets including writing and oral communication, problem solving, listening abilities, research, and management skills. Remember that law schools do accept students from a variety of majors, so if someone does possess the skills above, it is likely that they will be accepted.

Accounting, public speaking, English, economics, and literature are valuable courses for people wanting to become a lawyer.

3. Success for lawyers means extra work

Law students wanting to become lawyers should get involved with a wide variety of extracurricular activities. This looks good on a law school application. Some activities to get involved in include community issues and law programs on campus. If there is a group or society that pertains to law, you should consider joining it. Remember, the more work you do, the better chance you will have of being accepted at a law school. Another reason for motivation– most law schools require an application fee just to apply and the quicker you get in to a law school, the more money you will save.

4. The Law School Admission Test (LSAT)

It is important to study hard and prepare for the LSAT for you if you want to become lawyer. Prospective lawyers should take LSAT prep courses. A lot of these courses are available for free. A high LSAT test score will go a long way in getting you into a school you want.
